Get More Sales By Improving Your Writing (Part 3: Cut the Fluff: How Clear Writing Can Skyrocket Your Sales!)

As a business owner, you know that every word counts. Your writing can make or break a sale. In the third part of our series on boosting your sales through better writing, we’re diving into a common pitfall: waffling.

Let’s uncover how cutting out the fluff can lead to clearer communication and more sales.

Waffling Costs You Sales

Imagine walking into a store where the salesperson talks endlessly about everything except what you want.

Frustrating, right?

This is exactly what happens when your writing is filled with unnecessary words and vague ideas. Waffling makes your message unclear, and when your audience doesn’t understand what you’re saying, they’re likely to walk away—just like that frustrated shopper.

Why Does Waffling Happen?

Waffling often creeps in when we feel the need to sound professional or knowledgeable. We think that using big words or lengthy explanations will impress our readers.

But here’s the truth: your audience wants straightforward information. They want to know how your product or service can solve their problems, not wade through a sea of unnecessary details.

The Cost of Confusion

When your writing is filled with fluff, it creates confusion. Confused customers don’t buy

They might even leave your website or ignore your emails entirely. Think about it: if someone can’t quickly grasp the benefits of what you’re offering, why would they spend their hard-earned money on it?

Waffling also affects your credibility. If your writing is unclear, potential customers may question whether you really know what you’re talking about.

They might think, “If they can’t explain this simply, how good can their product really be?”

Let’s say you run a landscaping business. You might write something like this:

“Here at Green Thumb Landscaping, we pride ourselves on providing exceptional services that cater to all aspects of outdoor beautification and maintenance, ensuring that every blade of grass is perfectly trimmed and every flower bed is meticulously arranged.”

Now, compare that to this:

“Want a beautiful yard? Green Thumb Landscaping offers expert lawn care and flower bed design to make your outdoor space stunning.”

Which one would grab your attention? The second one gets straight to the point and clearly states what you offer.

Write Clearly and Concisely

To stop waffling around in your writing, follow these simple steps:

1. Know Your Audience

Before you start writing, think about who will read it.

What do they care about? What problems do they need solving? Tailoring your message to their needs will help you stay focused.

2. Get to the Point

Start with the most important information. What do you want your reader to know first?

Make sure this key point is clear from the beginning.

Instead of saying, “We have been in business for over ten years providing various services,” say, “For ten years, we’ve helped homeowners create beautiful landscapes.”

3. Use Simple Language

Avoid jargon and complex words unless absolutely necessary.

Your goal is to communicate clearly, not to impress with vocabulary.

4. Cut Out Unnecessary Words

After writing a draft, go back and look for words or phrases that don’t add value. Ask yourself if each word serves a purpose.

5. Use Active Voice

Active voice makes your writing stronger and more direct. Instead of saying “The report was completed by our team,” say “Our team completed the report.”

6. Create Clear Calls-to-Action (CTAs)

Every piece of writing should guide the reader on what to do next.

Be clear about what action you want them to take—whether it’s signing up for a newsletter or making a purchase.

By eliminating waffling from your writing, you’ll find that:

- Your message is clearer: Customers understand exactly what you offer.

- Your credibility increases: Clear communication shows expertise.

- Your sales improve: When customers understand the value you provide, they are more likely to buy.
